  1. Installation Procedure for Full Bible Version
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  3.  
  4. Hardware Requirements
  5. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6.  
  7. - IBM XT, AT or compatible computer
  8. - at least 256K memory
  9. - hard disk drive C: (or another drive)
  10.     -  9 megabytes for AV
  11.     - 11 megabytes for Combined AV-NIV Version of Bible
  12.     -  2 megabytes for Greek Versions
  13.     -  4 megabytes for Spanish Version
  14.  
  15. Software Requirements
  16. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  17. - almost any current version of MS-DOS or PC-DOS works
  18.  
  19. - DOS 1.00 to 2.10 do NOT work
  20. - DOS 2.11 to DOS 4.01 do work
  21.     - (DOS 4.00 is NOT supported; it is too buggy.)
  22.  
  23. - DRDOS 3.41 or later should also work
  24.     - programme MAY run on earlier versions of DRDOS
  25.       but DRDOS is NOT 100% compatible with DOS,
  26.       so some things may not work
  27.  
  28. - DOS BOX under OS/2 version 1.1 & 1.2
  29.  
  30. - enter VER at DOS prompt if you don't know what version you have
  31.     - some DOS 4.01 versions are updated with a patch and show
  32.       a version of 4.00 even though it is version 4.01
  33.  
  34. Media Requirements
  35. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  36. - disk package should include:
  37.     - an INSTALLATION DISK to install ALL modules
  38.     - a TEXT module for each Bible version
  39.         - AV = Authorised Version text with Strong's #'s (7 disks)
  40.         - AV-NIV = Combined AV and NIV (10 disks)
  41.         - AV-RSV = Combined AV and RSV (10 disks)
  42.         - Greek Majority Text & Stephen's Text (3 disks)
  43.         - RVA Spanish Version (5 disks)
  44.     - CROSS REFERENCE module (2 disks)
  45.     - an OPTIONAL module for the Greek and Hebrew LEXICONS (4 disks)
  46.         -lexicons work with AV, AV-NIV, and AV-RSV text only
  47. - if you have 720k disks, about half the number of disks are needed.
  48.  
  49. Time Requirements
  50. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  51.  
  52. - installation takes about this long for the full AV
  53.  
  54.    - 30 minutes, 4.77 MHZ 8088 (XT)
  55.    - 20 minutes, 6.00 MHZ 286  (AT)
  56.    - 15 minutes, 25.0 MHZ 386  (AT class)
  57.  
  58. Installation is Easy
  59. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  60. 1) verify you have the correct hardware, software and media
  61.  
  62. 2) PUT WRITE PROTECT TABS ON DISKS
  63.  
  64. 3) if you have a version 3.03 or earlier installed,
  65.  
  66.    a) delete everything EXCEPT your notes directories
  67.    b) create directory on hard drive used to install Online Bible
  68.         e.g. md c:\bible
  69.    c) for each note directory, copy as follows
  70.         md   c:\bible\notes.000
  71.         copy c:\notes.000 c:\bible\notes.000
  72.         del  c:\notes.000
  73.         .
  74.         .
  75.         .
  76.         md   c:\bible\notes.300
  77.         copy c:\notes.300 c:\bible\notes.300
  78.         del  c:\notes.300
  79.     d) the installation marks your notes so the verse display
  80.        shows which verses have notes.
  81.     e) if you are unsure about how to do this, get a friend to help.
  82.  
  83. 4) make the floppy drive which contains the installation
  84.    disk your default drive, (i.e. set DOS prompt to A: or B:)
  85.  
  86. 5) enter GO from A: or B: DOS prompt to install the programme
  87.    DO NOT COPY DISKS ONTO HARD DRIVE - install from A: or B: drive
  88.  
  89. 6) reboot system after installation is complete
  90.  
  91. 7) use the mini-menu, MM to start the programme.
  92.  
  93. Directory Structure After Installation

  95. Version 4 and later uses the following directory structure.

  130. Network Installation
  131. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  132. - on a NOVEL or other network make sure the LASTDRIVE parameter
  133.   is correctly set in CONFIG.SYS to match the highest drive letter
  134.   used by the network.
  135.  
  136. Problems
  137. ~~~~~~~~
  138. 1) Data errors reading disks
  139.    - almost always caused by irregular spots ("dropouts") on disks,
  140.      but occasionally by actual disk damage (from a magnet, etc.),
  141.      and very rarely by dirty or poorly aligned read/write heads
  142.    - specify "Retry" to the DOS "Data error reading drive.." message
  143.    - Retry at least 50 times before giving up (this USUALLY works).
  144.      certain utilities such as PC Tools Compress (Surface) may work
  145.    - try on someone else's system
  146.        - if it works, COPY (don't DISKCOPY) the files to a better disk,
  147.          clean your drive heads and try again
  148.        - if it fails, reorder replacement disks from supplier
  149.  
  150. 2) installation fails or mysteriously aborts
  151.  
  152.     - you are likely running some sort of menu system that
  153.       has caused the installation to fail
  154.     - if you are running DOS 4.00 upgrade to DOS 4.01
  155.       or some other release. DOS 4.00 is so buggy it is hopeless.
  156.     - boot system from your original DOS disk
  157.     - retry installation
  158.     - if it fails, call for help
  159.  
  160. 3) VIRUS infection detected
  161.     - the installation disk must have the following files
  162.         go.bat, bible.901, view.com, install.exe,
  163.         install.901, read.me, sharewar.doc
  164.     - if these are altered, CRT displays VIRUS infection message
  165.       and stops the installation.
  166.     - this means the disk has been altered or is damaged.
  167.     - get replacement from distributors.
  168.  
  169. 4) CRC errors during installation
  170.  
  171.     - disks altered by distributors or damaged
  172.     - get replacements from distributors
  173.  
  174. 5) installation ok, but programme aborts with "Undefined File(4)" message
  175.  
  176.     - update CONFIG.SYS to specify 20 files
  177.     - see DOS manual for details
  178.  
  179. 6) all displays for programme are in black and white
  180.  
  181.     - read the manual.doc to see how to set the colours
  182.  
  183. Conclusion
  184. ~~~~~~~~~~
  185.  
  186. - if you have corrupted disks, get replacements from the one
  187.     you got them from
  188. - if you get stuck
  189.   - REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM FROM YOUR ORIGINAL DOS DISK IN DRIVE A
  190.     AND RETRY INSTALLATION BEFORE CALLING ANYONE
  191. - if you are still stuck, ask friend for help who knows about DOS
  192. - if you are still stuck, call your distributor
  193. - if he is stumped, write or call Larry Pierce for help and include your

  196.                       TWO important rules...
  197.

  200.                   1. Press "RETRY" up to 50 times if you
  201.                      get a "DATA ERROR" while installing.
  202.                      Sometimes opening and closing the drive
  203.                      latch and reinserting the disk fixes the
  204.                      problem.
  205.  
  206.                   2. If INSTALL fails mysterously, redo
  207.                      elminating ANY programme, device,
  208.                      menu, shell, RAM disk or file manager
  209.                      from memory.  ONLY DOS in memory. Its
  210.                      BEST to REBOOT from A: Drive using
  211.                      original DOS system disk.
  212.  
  213.                      Create a DOS system disk with command:
  214.  
  215.                          format a:/s
  216.
